Eating Fishy in Zimbabwe

Zimbabwe offers the finest in year round fresh-water fishing in Africa - in some of the most spectacular and beautiful settings to be fopund in the world.

Lake Kariba
Here in 5250 square kilometres of mountain framed lakeis found the prince of fresh-water sporting fishing: the striped and long-toothed Tigerfish. The Matusadona area is especially good for fishing around Fothergill and Spurwing Islands

The Zambezi River
Tilapia or bream of different varieties and the giant catfish, the Vundu, share the depths of this river with crocodile and hippo. The river itself is surrounded for most of its legth my game reserves and game areas allowing one to fish and observe a mutiude of game at the same time - a idealic setting by anyone's standards. As with just about everywhere on the Zambezi, the tiger, bream and barbel fishing here is superb, especially in the dry season, when the water is clear and the fish can see your spinner or bait clearly.

The Eastern Highlands
Here among the soft, wooded peaks of the Nyanga Mountains and the jagged crags of the Chimanimani Mountains, swiftly running steams abound with flashing trout.

Other areas
Numerous other lakes and dams abound where, in addition to indigenous species, large mouth bass have found a new home suitable for rapid growth. Much of Zimbabwe is a watershed, and from the uplands areas springs rise, combining into streams and then into rivers, which flow north to the Zambezi River and Lake Kariba, south-west to the Limpopo and east to the Pungwe. Along these rivers many man-made dams have been created, providing ideal habitats for the breeding and growth of numerous fish species. Over a hundred species of fish are found in Zimbabwe. The angler may fish the year round except on certain trout dams where the closed season can run from June to October.
