Fish Species |
This fish has a larger second dorsal and longer barbels than any other of the species found in Zimbabwe. It is usually a light to dark olive brown in colour - the teeth are small with two rows in the upper jaw - they have the appearance and texture of sandpaper. This is the largest specie, by far in Zimbabwe waters records being beyond 47 kg in weight. The Vundu prefers quiet water with deep pools - does not enter shallow water except at night and is seldom found in smaller rivers. The distribution of this fish is confined to the valley sections of lake Kariba and the Middle Zambezi but occasionally it has been found elsewhere. It can be found frequently in our large waterways. It will eat anything that can fit into its massive jaws! this includes fish, birds and smaller animals found in, or associated with water. It is also a scavenger and will often near fishing camps scooping up discarded offal. Stories of 'monsters' that got away are common with Vundu! Fishing practice is as for the sharptooth catfish - but larger bait and heavier tackle are used. Anglers' bait preference include ox livers, hearts, kidneys, plucked birds, meat and fish that have been cut down the belly and turned inside out. Smaller specimens will take a spoon and tend to move downstream using the current and their weight to combat the angler. |
