The Kariba International Tiger Fish Tournament started
in 1962, with a group of farmers who had a break in the planting season
deciding to go fishing.
It is known that in the first week or so of October all able anglers'
migrate to Kariba for the yearly event.
The fever of "it's Tiger Time" starts building up in
early September and reaches its climax by the start of the tournament.
Some 400-odd boats will gather, this year at Charara point, Lake Kariba,
at 6am on Wednesday 10th October 2001 for the start of the 40th Annual
Kariba International Tiger Fish Tournament.
The Tournament is run over 3 days and is used by the Lake Fisheries for
the research of Tiger fish.
The Tournament brings in much needed foreign currency from international
teams - some 30 international teams attended the 2000 event, and we have
already had entries from Norway, Malawi, South Africa, United Arab Emirates,
Zambia and Britain. We have also had enquiries from USA, Finland, and
Botswana.
Local teams have already started entering and the top teams are preparing
areas for this year's 40th birthday.
At the NAUZ Charara Site preparations are well under way for the event,
with the site management team working flat out to get the site ready.
