POACHING – ZIMBABWE’S SHAME The photographs on the following pages may be distressing to some people - especially animal lovers. they have been placed on these pages to show the brutality of the poacher: Buck
A further factor now adds to this catastrophe – drought. As the drought bites, so water bodies recede making the work of the poacher that much easier. A question often posed is: The Answer What we can determine however are trends and possible losses from sound poaching statistics. For example one lowveld ranch has physically recovered 210 poached carcasses in 24 months. There is a minimum of a 100 such ranches (size and animal density), in Natural Regions IV and V alone, suggesting mortalities of 21,000 animals could have been sustained. Discussions with ranchers indicate this to be considered a conservative figure with real losses more likely to be double or even treble especially considering no account has been taken of small mammal losses. THE ISSUE AT STAKE IS TO HALT THE SLAUGHTER
